1997-99 Redevelopment

Having remained as the headquarters of NSW postal system since its completion, the GPO was privatised and leased out in 1996 as part of the disbursement of assets by the Federal Government of Australia. It was refurbished through the work of Sydney-based architectural practice Clive, Lucas & Stapleton and subsequently the building houses shops, restaurants, hotel rooms, and the foyer of two adjoining tower blocks.

From May 1997 to September 1999, the GPO building was restored and redeveloped by the Melbourne-based Grocon Group, introducing hospitality, retail, hotel and health club facilities to the property now known as No.1 Martin Place. The refurbishment was completed in September 1999 to coincide with the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
